Igawa was a huge bust for the Yankees last season after the team spent $26 million to negotiate with him before signing the Japanese lefty to a five-year $20 million contract. New York enters this series following an impressive win on Thursday against the Cleveland Indians, as the Yankees salvaged the finale of that three-game series by belting four home runs on their way to a 6-3 win at Yankee Stadium.
Johnny Damon was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in, while Jason Giambi, Robinson Cano and Wilson Betemit all smacked homers for the Yankees, who finished their nine-game homestand at just 4-5.
The homers were enough to make a winner of Mike Mussina (5-3), who lasted five innings after allowing three runs on four hits. Mariano Rivera, appearing in his 800th career game, came on in the ninth for his ninth save of the season.
New York will be starting a seven-game road trip tonight that will conclude with a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yanks are 9-9 away from home this season.
Detroit, meanwhile, has struggled since sweeping the Yankees, as it has dropped six of seven since, including three of four in Boston, where it dropped a 5-1 decision on Thursday at Fenway Park. Ramon Santiago knocked in the lone run for the Tigers in the loss.
Justin Verlander (1-6) was tagged for nine hits and five runs in the setback, his third straight setback.
Detroit will turn to veteran left-hander Kenny Rogers to stop the bleeding tonight. Rogers, who is 2-3 with a 6.27 ERA this season, received a no- decision in his last start against Minnesota, as he allowed five runs (three earned) and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of his team's 7-6 loss.
Rogers had beaten the Yankees two starts ago and is 6-7 lifetime against them with four saves and a 6.25 ERA in 36 games (15 starts).
The Tigers have won the last five and six of their last seven meetings with the Yankees. New York dropped three of four in the Motor City a year ago.

22 year old Chris Richardson was up next. He was listed with +1100 odds coming in. He got the best response from the judges though Simon did not believe the vocal was that great.
Nick was boring and pitchy. Simon didn't think he was that bad though and predicted he would be back next week. Nick Pedro was a big +3000 dog coming into this competition.
Beat boxer Blake Lewis was listed with early +1000 odds or $1000 payout on a $100 bet if he were to become the next American Idol winner odds . These of course were the early odds. He was considered original for picking an "odd song". He did not beat box and the judges felt it was the best vocal of the night.
Sanjaya came in as the second biggest favorite after Chris Sligh but his performance Tuesday night was not very good.
Chris Sleigh was the early favorite at +450 odds. Great voice and a great sense of humor. He's a real standout. Randy felt it was on point but maybe ahead of the chorus a little bit. Simon Cowell said he felt like he was in some "sort of weird student gig".
Jared Cotter followed. He was listed with +2000 odds early on to win the competition. The judges felt he needs to take more risks but looked good.
22-year old AJ Talbado, who has tried out for American Idol five times, was up next. "Kind of a theme park performance" said Simon. Though the judges felt he performed okay. Simon did feel AJ might be better than he originally thought.
Phil - this season's military favorite - came into this competition with +1200 odds to win the competition. He was the last to perform. He was certainly strong enough to get through this stage of the competition and perhaps the best one after a shaky start.

USC lost two Pacific-10 Conference games a year ago, the first time that had happened in five seasons, and university officials withstood the urge to form blue-ribbon panels to unearth the cause of such a disaster. Instead, the Trojans gathered themselves and routed Michigan, 32-18, in the Rose Bowl.
USC's losses at Oregon State and at UCLA last year should have given pause to those who question the Pac-10's football prowess (such as, without naming names, L.M. from Baton Rouge). The league only got deeper this season; Dennis Erickson is taking over an Arizona State team that never quite got out of its own way under his predecessor, Dirk Koetter.
Erickson will resume his quest to become the first coach to win a national championship at two schools. Both he and Spurrier, now in his third season at South Carolina, returned to college football at schools with lower profiles than where they won their titles.

Bobby Bowden is attempting to remake at Florida State what he built at, um, Florida State. Bowden rebuilt his offensive staff, bringing in four new coaches led by Saban's former offensive coordinator, Jimbo Fisher, to jump-start an offense that has been dead for a couple of years.
The Atlantic Coast Conference is expected to show new signs of life, too. That is said with no disrespect toward last season's champion, Wake Forest, which provided one of the best story lines of 2007. The Demon Deacons begin this season in their customary position, overshadowed by the Virginia Techs, Miamis and Florida States.
It's not that Wake will find it difficult to duplicate its success in 2007 as much as the feeling that success engendered. Surprising success is the narcotic of sport. It never feels quite so euphoric the next time. Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese has figured this out. He refers to 2007, when a league looked down upon by fans and foes alike took three undefeated teams into November, as "Cinderella."
The fairy tale may be over, but the Big East has four genuine Heisman Trophy candidates in Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm, West Virginia tailback Steve Slaton and quarterback Pat White, and Rutgers tailback Ray Rice. Rutgers, as did Wake Forest and, of course, Boise State, proved last season that the have-nots in college football occasionally have quite a lot.
The Broncos' rousing 43-42 overtime victory over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl has raised the profile of all schools in conferences that don't get automatic BCS bids. This season, TCU and Hawaii are the preseason favorites to burst through the BCS doors and earn an at-large bid. The Warriors return 14 starters from an 11-3 team, including quarterback Colt Brennan.
Brennan not only broke the single-season record with 58 touchdown passes in 2007, but he also led Division I-A in passing efficiency (186.0). The senior is expected to contend for the Heisman Trophy, and neither his success nor the rise of his team should come as any surprise in the 2007 season.
After all, Hawaii is the southernmost team in the country.
