Twins trouce Rays

Baseball Betting Lines

04/15/2007 - Minneapolis, MN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Michael Cuddyer went 4-for-4, knocking in two runs and scoring three to lead a 14-hit Twins attack as Minnesota trounced Tampa Bay, 12-5.

Torii Hunter knocked in three runs on two doubles, and Jason Tyner went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Twins, who have won three of four. Sidney Ponson (1-1) earned his first win as a Twin despite a somewhat rocky performance. Ponson only gave up two runs, and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings, but allowed eight hits and walked three.

Ponson rebounded from a rough first outing in a Twins uniform, as the Yankees pounded him up for eight runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings on Monday.

Edwin Jackson gave up five runs - four earned - on only three hits in three innings of work. Jackson walked five and struck out none. The Tampa bullpen combined to give up seven runs on 11 hits in five innings.

Carlos Pena had a three-run home run for the Devil Rays, who have dropped two of three to the Twins. Tampa can earn a split with a win on Sunday in the series finale.

The Twins took the lead for good with a three-run third inning. Tyner singled and Joe Mauer walked, and Cuddyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Morneau, who promptly singled to score Tyner. Hunter followed with a fielder's choice groundout that scored Mauer, and a Jason Kubel sacrifice fly scored Cuddyer to give Minnesota a 5-2 lead.

Hunter ripped an RBI double in the fifth to give the Twins a 6-2 lead.

The Twins strung together five straight two-out hits in the sixth to blow the game open. Tyner doubled to right to get things started, and scored on Mauer's single. Cuddyer and Morneau followed with back-to-back RBI singles, and Hunter hit a run-scoring double to put Minnesota up 9-2.

Luis Rodriguez led off the seventh with a home run, his first of the season. Tyner hit an RBI double later in the inning, and scored on a Cuddyer single, and the Twins led 12-2.

Pena ripped a three-run homer to dead center field in the ninth, his second of the year.

A Cuddyer single to right field scored Luis Castillo in the first, and a throwing error allowed Mauer to score as well, giving the Twins a 2-0 lead.

Delmon Young helped the Rays get right back into the game, leading the second inning off with a double, and scoring on Dioner Navarro's ground-rule double to right-center. A B.J. Upton single scored Navarro, and tied the game at 2-2.

Game Notes

With Pena's homer in the ninth, the Rays have now hit at least one home run in each of their 11 games...The Twins, who had a 10-game home winning streak over Tampa Bay snapped on Friday, have won 16 of 18 overall against the Rays...Tyner narrowly missed hitting his first career home run, as his RBI double bounced high off the wall in right-center in the seventh. Tyner has yet to homer in 1,068 career at bats.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
