08/24/2008 - Kansas City, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jose Guillen homered and Mark Teahen drove in three runs, as the Kansas City Royals topped the Detroit Tigers, 7-3, to avoid a three-game sweep and halt a seven-game losing streak.
Esteban German and Miguel Olivo also knocked in a run for Kansas City, while Alberto Callaspo finished 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Brandon Duckworth (1-0), who had his contract purchased from Triple-A Omaha before the game, picked up the win after he allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings of work.
Placido Polanco had three hits and two RBI for the Tigers, who lost for the fourth time in their last nine games. Carlos Guillen and Marcus Thames both went 2-for-4.
Kenny Rogers (9-11) suffered the loss, tagged for seven runs -- six earned -- on eight hits over six innings. The veteran left-hander also walked four and struck out four.
The Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on Magglio Ordonez's RBI single, then tacked on two more runs in the second. With a runner on first and two gone, Brandon Inge and Curtis Granderson drew consecutive walks to load the bases for Polanco, who lined a two-run single to center for a 3-0 Tigers advantage.
However, the Royals responded with a pair of runs in their half of the second. Jose Guillen led off the frame by slugging an offering from Rogers over the wall in left. Billy Butler then walked and Ross Gload had a one-out double before Teahen drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
A miscue in the field and a wild pitch contributed to a two-run fifth for the Royals. Callaspo hit a soft liner to right and Mike Aviles pulled a single to left that Thames bobbled, which allowed both runners to take an extra base. A German sac fly drove in the tying run. Aviles advanced to third on the play and later scored when Rogers uncorked a wild pitch for a 4-3 Royals lead.
The Royals put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth. Jose Guillen walked and Butler doubled over the head of Thames in left to begin the inning. Joey Gathright came on as a pinch-runner for Guillen and scored when Olivo grounded into a fielder's choice. One out later, Teahen made it a 7-3 game with a two-run single.
Game Notes
Guillen's homer was his 17th of the season...Rogers has dropped five of his last six starts...Kip Wells tossed two scoreless innings of relief for Kansas City...Detroit left nine men on base, while the Royals stranded seven...The Royals also announced Sunday that they optioned pitcher Josh Newman to Omaha and transferred pitcher Luke Hochevar from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list, effectively ending the right-hander's season.

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.
The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.
MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.
Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.

Two playoff teams from 2007 take center stage on the NFL Network Sunday night in a Week 2 NFL betting match-up when the (0-1) New England Patriots betting head south to Florida for a contest with the (1-0) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
New England HC Bill Belichick couldn’t care less about the way his team plays in the preseason. With a chance to tie last week’s game with the Baltimore Ravens betting, He elected to go for the two-point conversion and outright victory. The conversion failed, and the Pats ended up falling to the Ravens by a 16-15 final count.
New England rolled off twelve unanswered points to give it a chance at securing the victory, but it never threatened to cover the 3.5-point spread. NFL bettors saw this one coming, as they bet the Ravens down from +6 to +3.5 as the week progressed. QB Tom Brady didn’t take part in the Patriots first preseason clash, but could see action this weekend.
His three replacements all put up embarrassing numbers. They went a combined 17 for 33, and threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. The New England defense was encouraging, as they held the Ravens to 2/12 third down conversions and surrendered just ten first downs. That ‘D’ should be bolstered with the addition of former Bucs and Denver Broncos betting safety John Lynch, who could make his Patriots debut on Sunday against his former mates.
HC Jon Gruden had to be impressed with the way his Bucs played on both sides of the ball in their dominating 17-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1’s NFL pre-season betting action. Bucs bettors were quite happy with the effort, as they made a mockery of the fact that they were underdogs in the game.
The logjam at the quarterback position didn’t get any easier to separate for Gruden, as all four of his QBs had positive experiences in the first exhibition of 2008. The four combined to complete 28 of their 40 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, and that was without starting QB Jeff Garcia in the lineup.
RB Michael Bennett had 19 carries and four receptions, totaling 90 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see more of Bennett, Kenneth Darby, and Earnest Graham, as they all compete for playing time with Warrick Dunn in the backfield this season. Defensively, the Bucs recorded four sacks and held the Fins offense in check all day.
First round draft pick Aqib Talib was impressive in the secondary, recording a tackle and two pass defenses in his debut. Don’t be surprised to see Talib in the starting lineup opposite Ronde Barber for the Bucs in ’08.
The betting trends suggest that NFL bettors should be backing the Bucs in this intra-conference exhibition.
These two teams hooked up last year in Tampa Bay, with the Bucs winning that game 13-10. The Buccaneers have only lost one preseason game at home dating back to the beginning of the ’05 preseason. The Patriots have had a mixed bag of results in their recent exhibitions. They have gone 2-2 ATS and SU each of the last three years.
New England currently sits as modest 1-point favorites in this preseason showdown with the ‘total’ now sitting at 34.5.
