08/23/2008 - Minneapolis, MN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jeff Reed nailed a 47-yard field goal as time expired and Byron Leftwich was 16-of-23 passing for 129 yards to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 12-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the third preseason clash for both squads.
Rashard Mendenhall had 15 carries for 79 yards, but fumbled twice, and caught two passes for another 15 yards for the Steelers (2-1). Ben Roethlisberger hit 10-of-17 passes for 65 yards. Reed hit all four of his field goal attempts, accounting for all 12 Pittsburgh points.
With Tarvaris Jackson out with a right MCL sprain, Gus Frerotte got the start under center and went 13-of-19 for 133 yards and an interception for the Vikings (1-2). John Booty came in and connected on 4-of-5 passes, totaling 19 yards. Adrian Peterson had 12 carries for 21 yards and the game's only touchdown, while also grabbing three passes for 11 yards.
Visanthe Shiancoe caught a pair of passes for 36 yards and Ryan Longwell hit his field goal try and his extra point attempt.
Trailing by one point, the Steelers got the ball at their own 26-yard line just prior to the two-minute warning. Leftwich drove Pittsburgh deep into Minnesota territory on 10 plays before Reed kicked a 47-yard field goal to give the Steelers the 12-10 victory.
Peterson trotted in a one-yard touchdown at the 14:12 mark of the second quarter to give the Vikes a 7-0 lead.
Reed knocked down a 35-yard field goal to pull the Steelers within 7-3 with just a bit over the 6 1/2 minute mark.
Longwell's 37-yard boot gave Minnesota a 10-3 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third. Reed, though, countered with a 43-yarder to make it a four-point game heading into the final stanza.
Reed then nailed a 37-yard kick with 10 minutes left in the game, making it 10-9.
Elsewhere on the injury front for Minnesota, wide receivers Bernard Berrian (turf toe) and Sidney Rice (illness) were out for the setback.
Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu (hamstring) did not play in the game and linebacker Larry Foote hurt his left knee in the first quarter and did not return.
