04/15/2007 - Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - In a matchup of two aces, Jake Peavy won decidedly over Jason Schmidt, leading the San Diego Padres to a 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Peavy (2-0) baffled the Dodgers, allowing only one run and three hits while fanning three in seven innings. Kevin Kouzmanoff ripped a two-run shot, and Terrmel Sledge went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Padres, who have won two of three, and five of seven. Brian Giles hit a solo homer for San Diego.
Schmidt (1-2) had his shortest outing since 2002, as he was tagged for six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in only two innings of work.
Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-3 for the Dodgers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped, and fell for only the second time in nine games. Russell Martin had an RBI single, and scored a run for LA.
Things fell apart for Schmidt and the Dodgers in the second inning. Khalil Greene started things off with a double to left, and scored on Sledge's single to right. Kouzmanoff followed with his first homer of the season, a shot to dead-center, and San Diego led 4-0.
Schmidt walked Pete Laforest, and a Jeff Kent error on Peavy's sacrifice bunt attempt put men on first and second with no outs. Marcus Giles ripped a single to center to score Laforest, and Brian Giles followed with a single to score Peavy. Schmidt was able to bear down and retire the next three Padres, but the damage was done, and San Diego led 6-0.
Schmidt was pulled after allowing the first two batters to reach base in the third inning.
Laforest punched an RBI single into right field in the fifth to put San Diego up 7-0.
A Jeff Kent sac fly got the Dodgers on the board in the sixth. The Dodgers tacked on another run with a Martin's run-scoring single in the eighth.
Brian Giles homered to right field in the first to get things started for the Padres, putting San Diego up 1-0.
