08/09/2008 - Flushing, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Mets purchased the contract of pitcher Brian Stokes from Triple-A New Orleans to make a spot start for Saturday's game against the Florida Marlins.
Stokes, 28, has made 23 appearances -- 22 starts -- in Triple-A this season, compiling a 10-8 record with a 4.41 earned run average. Stokes recorded a 3-7 record and 6.46 ERA in 64 games -- including four starts -- with Tampa Bay in 2006-07.
The spot start comes in the wake of John Maine's stint on the disabled list with a strained right rotator cuff. Maine hasn't pitched since July 28 against the Marlins, as he was forced to leave the game after sustaining the injury.
To make room for Stokes on the roster, the Mets optioned pitcher Ruddy Lugo to New Orleans. Lugo has not made any appearances for the Mets this season.
