Maine hopes rest will lessen the pain. The right-hander will refrain from exercising for a week and throwing for two weeks. New York manager Jerry Manuel had not indicated who will replace Maine in the rotation, though, the Mets will likely conduct the search internally.

This marks Maine's second stint on the DL this season. The 27-year-old was placed on the DL on August 3, retroactive to July 29, with a mild strain of his right rotator cuff. He was reinstated on August 13.

Maine is 10-8 with a 4.18 earned run average in 25 starts for New York, which, going into Monday's action, holds a tenuous half-game lead over the surging Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East.

In a corresponding move, the club activated second baseman Luis Castillo from the 15-day DL. He has not played since July 2 because of a strained left hip flexor.

Castillo is batting .261 with three home runs and 26 RBI in 68 games this season.
