Marseille, Rennes battle to dramatic draw in Ligue 1 opener

Hatem Ben Arfa led Marseille to a 3-1 halftime lead with a goal and an assist in the opening 45 minutes. Bakari Kone, Hatem Ben Arfa and Mamadou Niang all scored for Marseille within the first half hour after Rennes took an early sixth-minute lead.

Olivier Thomert grabbed a goal after the break and Steve Mandanda scored an own-goal in the 89th minute to make it 3-3 before everything erupted in the final minutes when Eliot Grandin and Bruno Cheyrou traded goals as the game ended in a 4-4 draw.

In other Ligue 1 action on Saturday: Auxerrem topped Nantes, 2-1; Sochaux fell to Grenoble, 1-2; Bordeaux edged Caen, 2-1; Monaco, Valenciennes, Le Havre and Lorient all earned 1-0 wins over PSG, St. Etienne, Nice and Le Mans, respectively; Nancy and Lille battled to a 0-0 draw.
