Marlins continue series with Cardinals

Baseball Betting Lines

08/13/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - While the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies are floundering out west in LA, the Florida Marlins are slowly climbing their way back to the top of the division.

The Marlins will try to gain more ground on the Phillies tonight, when they resume a four-game series versus the St. Louis Cardinals at Dolphin Stadium. After losing Monday's opener by a 4-2 score, Florida rebounded with last night's 4-3 triumph in the second test of this set.

All-Star Hanley Ramirez highlighted the offense with a three-run homer and Cody Ross ended 2-for-2 with a run scored for the Marlins, who won for the second time in three games to pull within 1 1/2 games of the Phillies in the NL East. The New York Mets are just a game off the pace.

Marlins starter Chris Volstad earned the victory on Tuesday after allowing three runs on five hits and three walks in five innings of work. Florida is 1-1 on a seven-game homestand and 34-27 in South Beach this season.

Ricky Nolasco will try to break out of his current slump when he handles pitching duties for the Marlins on Wednesday. Nolasco has dropped three of his last four decisions, spanning five starts, and was beaten by the New York Mets his last time out on Friday.

Nolasco was reached for three runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings of a 3-0 loss at Shea Stadium.

The righty, who is 5-4 at home this season, will make his second career start versus St. Louis tonight. Nolasco is 0-1 with an 8.53 earned run average in two appearances, one start, against the Cardinals.

St. Louis has lost two of three and four of its last six games to fall four games behind Milwaukee in the National League Wild Card standings. It is also seven games behind the Chicago Cubs for the top spot in the NL Central.

In Tuesday's loss to the Marlins, Ryan Ludwick drove in all three runs for the Cardinals, who fell to 2-3 on a 10-game road trip. Starting pitcher Kyle Lohse was tagged for four runs on six hits in just 4 1/3 innings to absorb the loss. The righty has now lost three of his last four starts since going unbeaten (9-0) over his previous 14 trips to the mound.

The Cardinals, who are 33-28 away from Busch Stadium this season, will send Braden Looper to the mound on Wednesday. Looper is just 1-4 over his last eight starts with three no-decisions. Looper did not factor in the outcome of a 3-2 loss at Chicago on Friday, as the righty allowed a pair of runs on six hits through seven frames.

Looper, who is 10-9 with a 4.20 earned run average in 24 starts this season, is 6-3 in 11 starts away from Busch Stadium in 2008. The former closer has made 18 career appearances (two starts) against the Marlins, logging a 3-2 mark, four saves and a 5.53 ERA over that stretch.

St. Louis and Florida are meeting for the first time since the Cardinals won four of six meetings a year ago. St. Louis is 14-7 in this series since the 2005 season, including an 8-3 mark as the visitor.

The Cardinals have won 12 of their last 17 games in South Beach.
