08/24/2008 - Portland, OR (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Cristie Kerr birdied the first playoff hole Sunday to defeat Helen Alfredsson and Sophie Gustafson and win the Safeway Classic.
The win was Kerr's 11th on the LPGA Tour and her first since her major breakthrough last year at the U.S. Women's Open.
"Just amazing," said Kerr, who pocketed $255,000 for the victory. "Words can't describe it. It's great. Last year here at Columbia Edgewater I said I wanted to win it. It's unbelievable."
The trio returned to Columbia Edgewater's 18th hole, a hole all three birdied in regulation.
Alfredsson and Kerr both found the fairway off the tee, while Gustafson pushed her drive into the right rough. Alfredsson knocked her approach to 30 feet and Kerr hit an eight-iron 18 feet short of the stick. Gustafson's second stopped on the green.
Alfredsson and Gustafson both missed their birdie putts, but Kerr drained her's for the victory.
"That putt on the first playoff hole was unreal," said Kerr. "It was in the whole way."
Kerr fired a seven-under 65 on Sunday to join overnight leader Alfredsson, who shot a 69, and Gustafson, who posted a 68, in a tie after regulation at 13- under 203.
Kerr parred her first four, then rattled off four birdies in a row from the fifth to get within one of the lead. A dropped shot at the 11th momentarily stalled her effort, but birdies at 12 and 14 got her back into the hunt.
Alfredsson maintained her lead with an eight-foot birdie putt at the 15th. She needed it since Gustafson knocked her approach at the same hole to four feet. Gustafson sank her birdie putt to stay one behind Alfredsson, who got to 13- under par for the championship.
Gustafson once again hit another sensational iron to four feet at the par- three 16th. She converted that birdie putt to match Alfredsson atop the leaderboard.
Kerr parred 15 and 16 and was two back. She got one stroke back with a birdie at 17, while the co-leaders struggled at the hole. Gustafson and Alfredsson both missed the fairway en route to bogeys. With Kerr's birdie and the bogeys from the leaders, the trio was knotted in first at minus-12.
Kerr sank a 15-footer for birdie on 18 to get into the clubhouse at 13-under par.
Alfredsson hit a spectacular approach to four feet in the final group. Gustafson's second rolled to 12 feet, but she holed the birdie putt to get her invitation to the playoff. Alfredsson sank her birdie try and the three headed to the extra session, where Kerr took the title.
"I played great yesterday and today," said Kerr. "I putted pretty poorly the first round. I figured out something about the greens and about my stroke. I knew if I posted a number I'd be hard to beat."
Last week's Canadian Women's Open winner Katherine Hull shot a five-under 67 and finished fourth at minus-11, one shot better than Hee-Won Han, who fired a six-under 66 on Sunday.
World No. 1 and 2007 champion Lorena Ochoa (70), Annika Sorenstam (69), Paula Creamer (72), Angela Park (70) and Catriona Matthew (70) shared sixth place at seven-under 209.

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.
